Abstract

This article explores the universe of interactive books for children, highlighting their evolution and main characteristics. Children’s picture books, known for their diverse formats and materials, go beyond being simple reading supports by combining visual and verbal communication to enrich the reading experience. Through differentiated layouts, varied materials, and innovative printing techniques, these books encourage interaction and sustained engagement with reading. Their design is closely linked to the narrative, creating cohesion between form and content that appeals to both young readers and the adults who purchase them. The experimental interface of toy books expands the possibilities of integrating content and form, reinforcing the role of editorial design in the creation of engaging and interactive works. From a design perspective, this article presents toy books by considering the relationship between text, image, and the history of this medium, contributing to broader discussions in Brazilian design research.

Luciana Sales Cordeiro, São Paulo State University

Is a PhD student in Design at the Postgraduate Program in Design at São Paulo State University (FAAC/UNESP-Bauru). Bachelor’s degree in Design from the Federal University of Ceará (UFC).

Caio Matheus de Almeida Verdelli, UNESP

Holds a Master’s degree in Design from the Postgraduate Program in Design at the São Paulo State University (FAAC/UNESP-Bauru). Holds a degree in Fashion Design from the Federal Technological University of Paraná (UTFPR).

Felipe Pereira Raposo, UNESP

Holds a Master’s degree in Design from the Postgraduate Program in Design at São Paulo State University (FAAC/UNESP-Bauru). Postgraduate degree (specialization) in Teaching in Basic Education from the Federal Institute of Minas Gerais (IFMG) and Bachelor’s degree in Design from the Federal University of Maranhão (UFMA).

Fernanda Henriques, São Paulo State University

Is researcher and professor at the Faculty of Architecture, Arts, Communication and Design of the São Paulo State University (FAAC/UNESP-Bauru), working in both undergraduate and graduate programs in Design. She leads the research group “Inclusive Graphic Design: hearing, vision and language”. She holds a PhD in Communication and Semiotics from the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC-SP), where she completed a doctoral internship at the University of Seville, Spain, with a CAPES scholarship. She has a master’s degree in Communication and Semiotics from PUC-SP and a degree in Advertising from Mackenzie Presbyterian University.
