Abstract

This article examines the role of the contemporary artist as a mediator and regulator of the “margins of indeterminacy” at the intersection of art, technology, and living organisms, based on an analysis grounded in Gilbert Simondon’s thought. This research investigates how artistic processes involving artificial systems and living organisms can be understood as open couplings in a metastable state. The text also presents as a case study the work Breathing by Guto Nóbrega, a piece that emerges from the agency between machine systems and living organisms.

Author Biographies

Artur Cabral Reis, Universidade de Brasília

Artista computacional, mestre em Artes Visuais pela Universidade de Brasília, doutorando bolsista CAPES também na Universidade de Brasília. Atualmente, faz parte da equipe do Medialab/UNB, onde explora, em suas pesquisas, a relação entre a arte e a computação por meio de interfaces e poéticas computacionais.

Guto Nóbrega, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro

Doutor em artes interativas pelo programa The Planetetary Collegium - Universidade de Plymouth - UK (2009). Pós-doutor em Arte e Tecnologia pelo PPGAV/UnB (2019). É professor associado na Escola de Belas Artes / UFRJ, membro do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Artes Visuais da UFRJ e da UnB e atua como Vice-Decano do Centro de Letras e Artes / UFRJ. Fundou e coordena o NANO - Núcleo de Arte e Novos Organismos. É bolsista de Produtividade em Pesquisa do CNPq.
