The article discusses the relationships between democracy, art, and memory through Latin American artistic and curatorial practices that confront the erasures produced by military dictatorships, colonialism, and contemporary forms of political violence. In dialogue with Marilena Chauí’s reflections on culture and democracy, Leda Maria Martins’s formulations on embodied memory, and the notion of democracy as a community of life developed by Achille Mbembe, the text proposes understanding contemporary art as a practice of counter-archiving and the activation of living archives. By analyzing exhibitions, video installations, performances, documents, operational images, and network-based projects, the article investigates how Latin American artists mobilize archives, testimonies, corporealities, and critical fabulations in order to reinscribe silenced memories and contest historical narratives within the public sphere.
